The Background
Brookwood Basketball has a proud history including 14 trips to the State Tournament, 7 Sweet Sixteen Appearances, 3 Elite Eight Appearances and 1 trip to the Final Four. This year’s team looks to continue the tradition of excellence with a return to the State Tournament!
After a tough 2017-18 season, the Broncos are excited about the 2018-19 version of the Broncos as we look to continue our tradition of excellence. Last season’s team finished 5 points shy of returning to the state tournament for back-to-back seasons with a heartbreaking loss to Berkmar in the Region 7-AAAAAAA tournament. It was a year of growth for a young team that included 8 losses by single digits. The returning players have taken those experiences and used it to fuel a group that is hungry for success in the upcoming season.
The 2018-19 edition of the Broncos features 9 seniors and 6 juniors that look to lead the Broncos back to the state playoffs for the 15th times in school history. 3 year letter winners Chris Smalls and Spencer Davidson lead the charge along with returning starter CJ Walker. Xavier Smith and Varun Danak look to have breakout seasons as the Broncos should be a well-rounded group with balanced scoring and statistics across the 15 man roster.
Broncos are 6-5 heading into Thursday (12/20) matchup w/ Duluth HS. 3 of
the 5 losses are against teams that have been ranked in the Top 10 in the
State (Meadowcreek, Norcross and Lambert). A core group of returners
highlighted by 3 year letter winners Spencer Davidson and Chris Smalls
along with returning starter CJ Walker lead the team as seniors, while
junior Varun Danak has provided a great spark as the team’s leading scorer
thru 11 games. The Broncos will be in the mix for a state playoff spot in
one of the toughest regions in the state of Georgia with the defending
State Champion (Meadowcreek) and Runner-Up (Norcross) currently in the top
2 spots.
Brookwood has had over 35 student-athletes receive basketball scholarships to schools including the University of Georgia, Clemson University, Temple University, The Citadel, Virginia Military and Furman. Numerous other basketball alumni have gone on to school receiving football, baseball and track & field scholarships as well.
