Past Seasons History:
2018-2019 season record 13-13 3-seed in Region 6-7A Tournament. Failed to make the State Tournament for the first time in my four years since Coach Allen has been at Mill Creek. Ready to make a run again this season.
Former Players Playing in College:
Miles Riley – Piedmont
Charles Botchway – UAFS (Arkansas Fort Smith)
Bernard Battle – Middle Ga Prep
Tre Rice – Ogelthorpe Univ
Highlights of This Season’s Schedule:
Non-Region schedule Consists of The North Ga Showcase event held at Buford Arena against Franklin County, Jared Cook Classic (Marietta, South Gwinnett), 1st Annual GA/South Carolina challenge where Mill Creek will play Westover from Anderson, SC. as well as participating in this years Deep South Classic held at Brookwood; All of these opponents are going to be extremely challenging. The GDP Challenge pits Mill Creek against a a very talented Cedar Shoals team to go along with the rest of their non region slate consisting of West Forsyth, Jefferson, Dacula, and Archer. These teams are all coming off impressive seasons and are expected to be even better this year. This schedule will help Mill Creek be battle tested going into their region so that they are prepared for those 12 games that will determine their seed in this years region tournament which will be held at Discovery HS.
Key returning players:
Jack Kostel (2020, PG) Jack is the lone returning starters from last year’s team. Recently committed to University of Alabama Huntsville. At 6’3 he has the size, strength, and basketball IQ needed to excel at his position. Mill Creek will be looking for him to constantly put them in the best position on offense, protect the ball, defend opponent’s better players, and rebound on both ends. as a JR he averaged 5.6 reb a game to go along with an Assist : Turnover ratio of almost 3:1
Zion Wimby (2020,Guard) Zion also logged a lot of minutes for Mill Creek as a Jr at the wing position. He has the ability to score at all three levels and can sit down and guard on the perimeter as well as the post if needed. He will be leaned on this year for scoring, defense, and leadership. Zion has received interest from several JUCCO teams and some D II coaches have also inquired about him. Looking for him to be a big part of the team’s success in 2019-2020 season
New comers:
David Lewis (2020, Post) – David is one of those players a coach wants to have. He has the intangibles that you do not have to teach, High energy guy with a motor and a knock for offensive rebounding. At 6’4 he may be a little undersized at the post position but makes up for it with his effort on a nightly basis.
Alex Garrison (2020, guard) – Alex is the glue guy that likes to do the little things. He is a very smart player and will provide leadership for our younger guys as well as contribute in the stat column. Looking for him to be a really good perimeter defender and a good decision maker on offense.
Josh Battle (6’2 Guard, 2021) – Currently on the MC football team but when he returns to the court he will make major contributions with his athletic and physical frame.
Connor Marshall and Justin Birch will make their debut at the varsity level along with 2 or 3 freshman that will surprise alot of people with their athletic ability.
Season Outlook from Coach Allen
We are going to play more of a open post type of offense to counter our lack of team size with the high IQ and athleticism that we will possess. With very few returning varsity players and at least 4 that are still making a playoff run in 7A football our success will largely be determined by how our Seniors lead. We will look to improve each game and practice while we build depth along the way so that we are playing our best basketball in February.
We compete in a brutal region (6-7A) and our non-conference teams will be extremely challenging as well. How we deal with adversity early on will send us on our path but there is no doubt that we will be tested every night with the quality of teams on our schedule. I believe we have what it takes to battle for our region Championship but it will not be an easy road.
